Monday, January 30, 2012 session at the Goan Gymkhana

It is always great to begin the week with a good body workout and this Monday was no exception.

After the usual warm up exercises,Ben Sempai took us through the first hour basically from the Gyaku Hanmi Katatedori stance and the techniques were:Uchi Kaiten Nage and Soto kaiten Nage.

I must admit the above techniques still give me a hard time especially the propelling of Uke to perform an Ukemi.

The second hour belonged to Daniel Sempai and he took us through the following techniques:
-Gyaku Hanmi Katate dori Shiho Nage Omote(Two versions)

-Gyaku Hanmi Katate dori Kokyu Ho

-Morote dori Kokyu Nage

-Hanmi handachi Shiho Nage

To top up the second hour,we went through some sweaty physical exercises that left practically every one of us dead beat.....lovely session!!!

Friday, January 27, 2012 session at the Japan Information and Culture Centre hall

The techniques of the day were all from the Ai Hanmi Katate dori stance except for Ryote dori Tenchi Nage.We had two ladies and one gentleman newcomers and my hope is that they enjoyed the two hours which for me were awesome!

Here are the techniques we went through:
Ai hanmi Katate dori:
-Ikkyo Omote
-Rokkyo
-Shiho nage Ura
-Kote Gaeshi, and
-Roye dori Tenchi Nage.

Apart from the above techniques, during the first hour we went through Mae Ukemi from both Suwari Waza and Tachi Waza....I can't wait for the day I shall perform Mae Ukemi from Tachi Waza faultlessly.

Forthcoming class:Monday, January 30, 2012
Venue:Goan Gymkhana.

See you there!!!

Monday, January 23, 2012 session at the Goan Gymkhana

Having missed out on a number of Aikido sessions between November last year to early this month seemed to have had an effect on me as evident on my poor showing during Friday's and yesterday's session and one could easily tell I was 'groping in the dark'.....

Back to the day's techniques,Ben Sempai took over the first hour and immediately after warming ourselves up with some exercises the techniques(from Tachi Waza) that followed were from the Ai Hanmi Katatedori stance:
-Nikyo Ura
-Sankyo Omote

Daniel Sempai took over the second hour and we quickly reviewed:
-Ai Hanmi Katatedori Sankyo Omote,Yonkyo and a version of Kokyu Nage(I guess it is Kata Gatame) that sends Uke spiralling down on the 'tatami'....

The day ended with Kokyu Ho Kokyu Dosa and good old Haishin Undo....

I bet to reap the most benefits from Aikido I will have to be a regular thrice weekly....the ball is in my court.

Friday, January 20, 2012 session at the Japan Information and Culture Centre hall

The day began with warm up exercises followed by Mae and Ushiro Ukemi from both Suwari Waza and Tachi Waza then we got down to business with the emphasis being on a Shomen Uchi attack....

From a Shomen Uchi attack,we performed:
-Tenchi Nage
-Shiho Nage through Ikkyo Omote
-Sumi Otoshi
-Kokyu Ho
-Irimi Nage
-Ikkyo Omote
-Kiri Otoshi
-A version of Kokyu Nage

The technique that stole it for me was Shomen Uchi Shiho Nage through Ikkyo Omote which when done fluidly really nails down the 'bad guy'.

It was a good session and I look forward to an even greater one today,Wednesday and Friday likewise.....

Incorporating yoga in aikido

Admittedly, the guy is not actually a yoga instructor but...cool stuff. Thumbs up from me.

Monday, 16th 2012 at Goan gym

This was our first class with Mateusz sensei (yes, he is back), and it was a great opportunity to find out exactly how much we had forgotten during our short break. Personally, it was an eye-opener because, having gotten used to the techniques by now, i almost always never remember the basics. So i end up doing something that looks like an aikido techniques, but in actual fact its not. Times i get really pissed off at myself for losing some very basic stuff, but...its a life-long struggle.
All the same, we dwelled a lot on a gyakuhanmi katatedori attack, from which we did a number of techniques ranging from kotegaeshi, to kokyunage, and finally finishing with aihanmi katatedori shihonage.

Aikido classes, 2nd week of January 2012

On Monday, 9th January 2012, we were back at the Goan Gymkhana on Museum Hill, and we started things slow with some basic movements, followed by gyakuhanmi shihonage omote in the first hour. In the second hour we focused on gyakuhanmi kote gaeshi omote and briefly reviewed gyakuhanmi reverse-kotegaeshi and gyakuhanmi kokyuho. Final technique for the day was kokyuho kokyudosa.

On Wednesday we started off with gyakuhanmi kotegaeshi omote, but when this proved tricky, we went back to the basics of gyakuhanmi ikkyo omote. We spent quite some time on this, especially given that the majority of people since Monday have been beginners. So we took our time to refine each detail, though we couldn't finish due to time limitations. In the second hour we again continued with ikkyo omote. When it got too much, we changed pace by doing gyakuhanmi ikkyo ura, gyakuhanmi nikyo ura, gyakuhanmi rokkyo and some sort of ryotedori nikyo suwari waza technique. We did not have our usual weapons class and iaido, but we hopefully should be resuming this schedule as from next week.

Honestly, things are quite slow at the moment but from experience, no 2 classes are ever the same, so there are lots of surprises ahead.

Next class is on Friday, 13th at the Japanese Embassy.
