Year ending session at the JICC Conference Room on Thursday, December 14, 2017

The last Aikido session of 2017 at the JICC Conference Room kicked off with a warm up session followed thereafter by Mae, Ushiro, Gyaku & Yoko Ukemi all from Tachi Waza as well as Mae & Ushiro Shikko before we went through the following:

TACHI WAZA :

-Tai No Tenkan Ho.

-Katatedori Shiho Nage Ura.

-Katatedori Kokyu Nage.

-Ai Hanmi Katatedori Irimi Nage Omote.

-Kata Gatame emanating from the opening of Ai Hanmi Katatedori.

-The session ended with Haishin undo.

Tuesday, December 5, 2017 session at the JICC Conference Room

After a warm up session that was followed by Mae, Gyaku and other Ukemi as well as Shikko and a series of breakfalls, Joshua Kohai kicked of the second part of the session with the following:

TACHI WAZA :

-Katatedori Koshi Nage.

-Chudan Tsuki Koshi Nage.

-Yokomen Uchi Koshi Nage.

-Yokomen Uchi Ude Kime Nage.

Walter Kohai demonstrated....

-Yokomen Uchi Kote Gaeshi Omote

....and then we wrapped up the session with Kata dori Nikyo Ura.

Haishin Undo was in order after a 'Nage full' session.

A reminder that on Thursday (December 7) and next Tuesday (December 12) no sessions will be held at the JICC Conference Room due to preparations for the upcoming rescheduled Japanese Cultural festival on Saturday, December 9 and the Jamhuri Day public holiday respectively.

As the turnout continues to decrease, the newcomers that showed up for the session were under the tutelage of Ben Sempai while Walter Kohai took the rest of us through the paces kicking off with warm up exercises followed by a round of Mae, Ushiro, Gyaku & Yoko Ukemi as well as Mae and Ushiro Shikko before we embarked on the following:

TACHI WAZA :

-Yokomen Uchi Kote Gaeshi (Omote & Ura).

-Yokomen Uchi Shiho Nage (Omote & Ura).

-Kata Dori Ikkyo & Nikyo (Omote & Ura).

SUWARI WAZA :

-Zagi Kokyu Ho.

We wrapped it up with Haishin Undo.

Thursday, November 9, 2017 session at the JICC Conference Room

The turnout witnessed was large just as it was last Tuesday and given the fact that the 'dojo' is not that big, it had to be 'divided' into two with James Kohai taking charge of the more advanced aikidoka, while the newcomers went through the paces learning the basics of Ukemi as well as Kamae, Tsugi Ashi and the stances.

Most of the newcomers have never practised martial arts before and need a lot of guidance especially when it entails dojo etiquette and hopefully we shall manage to accomodate them in our club.

A reminder on the upcoming Japanese cultural festival scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the Japan embassy, Nairobi (see poster below):

It was the largest turnout of newcomers witnessed in a while and I am not sure if it is Aikido that is gaining popularity or if it was sheer coincidence but all the same, Ben Sempai was on hand to guide us through the warm up session before taking over the newcomers while the rest of us carried on with the following after a round of Mae, Ushiro, Gyaku & Yoko Ukemi (all in Tachi Waza):

HANMI HANDACHI WAZA :

-Shiho Nage Omote.

-Ryote dori Shiho Nage Omote.

TACHI WAZA :

-Ryote dori Nikyo.

-Chudan Tsuki Kote Gaeshi.

Haishin Undo wrapped up the session for the rest of us.

-Kokyu Nage from the opening of Ai Hanmi Katatedori.

-Koshi Nage from the opening of Ai Hanmi Katatedori.

-Koshi Nage from Kiawase.

-Koshi Nage from a Muna dori grab.

The first part of the session culminated with a series of breakfalls before embarking on the following:

-Kokyu Nage version from the opening of Katatedori Ikkyo Omote.

-Morote dori Sumi Otoshi.

-Katatedori Sumi Otoshi.

-Ushiro Ryote dori Juji Nage.

-Ai Hanmi Katatedori Hiki Otoshi.

Thursday, September 28, 2017 session at the JICC Conference Room

It was Toshiyuki Kitayama Sensei's last day of posting in Nairobi and it is with a heavy heart that Nairobi Aikikai bids farewell to Toshi San as he progresses in his career at his new posting which coincidentally will be here in the African continent (if interested to know where, you are required to do 100 Ukemi before I tell you).

The session kicked off with warm up exercises, followed by Mae, Ushiro, Gyaku & Yoko Ukemi (Tachi Waza) as well as Mae & Ushiro Shikko then what followed was as follows:

SUWARI WAZA:

-Ai Hanmi Katatedori Ikkyo Omote & Ura.

-Ai Hanmi Katatedori Nikyo Omote & Ura.

-Zagi Kokyu Ho.

TACHI WAZA:

-A version of Irimi Nage from the opening of Katatedori Shiho Nage Omote.

The session ended with Haishin Undo.

Nairobi Aikikai takes this opportunity to send a heartfelt 'asante' to Toshiyuki san for his contribution in the growth of our club durig the last two years and ten months and we hope to see him very soon either here in Kenya, around Africa or even in the land of the rising sun.

Walter Kohai was on hand to guide us through the entire session which kicked off with some warm up exercises followed by a round of Mae & ushiro Ukemi (Tachi Waza) as well as Shikko.
