Tuesday, January 28, 2014 session at the JICC conference room

A big welcome to Rex ROMERO Sempai who is back again in Nairobi for a week or so before hitting the road....

Jason Sempai kicked off the warm up session followed by Daniel Sempai who took us through another set of warm up drills before embarking on a version of Katatedori Kokyu Nage whereby Tori leads Uke to the weak spot on the 'imaginary triangle' using an atemi as motivation.

Next up was Tori controlling Uke by using the wrist and one's centre to bring Uke on the toes(part of the preparation for Tenchi Nage).

Rex Sempai guided us through how to have a 'relationship' with the ground by showing us the safest way to fall down without injuring oneself.

I discovered various ways of landing safely thanks to Rex Sempai's insight.

After the session,we held a brief discussion outside with the main point of focus being the registration of members and the way forward for Nairobi Aikikai.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014 session at the JICC conference room

It has been a while since I witnessed a large turnout of newcomers to an Aikido session though it might be due to the fact that the next Karate intake is just around the bend.

All that aside,I was glad to see our chairman back after quite a while which is great news since we now have a 'back up sensei' incase Daniel sempai is not around.

Daniel sempai took us through the warm up session and it was almost impossible to do Ukemi since the room was half full.

The two techniques that we went through were:

-Katatedori Shiho Nage Omote.

-Tsuki Kote Gaeshi.

Thursday, January 16, 2014 session at the JICC conference room

It was a hot and humid Thursday as it is the norm here during the month of January and after a brief warm up session we went through the following techniques all being from the Ai Hanmi Katatedori stance:

-Ikkyo Omote

-Nikyo Omote

-Sankyo Omote

-Shorter version of Sankyo Omote.

I realised that the basic techniques are some of the most tasking ones to do correctly but then as they say 'practise makes perfect'.

Tuesday, January 14, 2014 session at the JICC conference room

Daniel Sempai took us through the warm up session before embarking on the day's programme which focused on the Shomen Uchi attack.

-Shomen Uchi Ikkyo Omote

-Shomen Uchi Irimi Nage Ura.

-Katatedori Kokyu Ho Omote.

Apart from the above,we also went through an exercise focusing mainly on using one's hips to displace Uke in an Omote movement from the Katatedori stance.

The most interesting part of the session was that the above mentioned techniques were all performed in Kakarigeiko.

NEXT SESSION:THURSDAY, JANUARY 16 @ THE SAME VENUE

Friday, January 10, 2014

Thursday, January 9, 2014

There was no aikido session this particular Thursday and the major reason being that Dennis was presented with a summary dismissal letter from Daniel Sempai in relation to a confrontation he had with the Nairobi Aikikai chairman Jason Sempai in November last year and even after being presented with the letter,he refused to leave the 'dojo' and thus there was no session.

It took the intervention of the guards at the embassy to escort him out of the premises.

To add onto that,Daniel Sempai informed us that he might be leaving Nairobi sometime this month due to work commitments.

The incident that took place was a sore reminder of how one individual can ruin the ambitions and aspirations of others by acting selfishly disregarding everyone else.

It is my hope that we shall carry on with the spirit of camaraderie and forge ahead in the true spirit of martial arts.

Having not practised Aikido for almost one whole month had a toll on me and that was all evident during the first session of 2014.

Daniel Sempai took us through the warm up session followed by the following techniques:

-Ai Hanmi Katatedori Ikkyo Omote & Ura respectively.

-Katatedori Kokyu Nage.

-Ryote Dori Tenchi Nage.

-A form of Kokyu Nage whereby Tori unbalanced Uke by taking the arm down at the tip of the 'imaginary triangle'.
